r seems modern, and though it no doubtpreserves generally the original design one cannot baseany argument on its technique. The interesting church of S. Jean at Autun observesthe Roman tradition in its fluted pilasters, and Corinthian-izing capitals, but it has taken a step in advance of thecathedral in its vault, which is cross-groined, so as toallow of large side windows. The church is cruciform, and has no aisles. There are stroncr transverse ribscarried curiously by short colonnettes bracketed outfrom the wall pier (Fig. 98), which consequently projectsconsiderably into the church, and helps the abutment. There are no diagonal ribs, and the bay being muchshorter from E. to W. than from N. to S. the cross vaulthas to ramp up like those at Vezelay. The apse is vaultedwith radiating ribs between which the panels are arched. At Valence the construction of the cathedral is dif-ferent (Fig. 99). Similar half columns areattached to the other three sides and carry the round archesof the nave and that across the aisle. There is neithertriforium nor clerestory; for the aisles, which are cross-groined, are nearly as high as the nave, the vault ofwhich springs from the level of the crown of the aislearch. Consequently the great vault of the nave is wellabutted by those of the aisles. The light is given bylarge round-headed windows in the upper part of theaisle walls, with jamb shafts in reveals at the sides. The construction has a certain resemblance to thatof some churches in distant Aquitaine, such as that ofS. Savin (v. sup. Plate CI I). The church is cruciform, with unusually long transepts, and in this district one is surprised to find over thecrossing a flattish dome on regular pendentives, anotherAquitan
