They do not appear however to be exposedon the exterior, but are concealed within drums andcovered with pyramidal roofs. Fresh influences wereimported by Saracenic and Norman invaders and settlerswhich may be traced especially in Sicily, whence theNormans expelled the Saracens in 1090. Their great 274 LOMBARDY (ch. xvii cathedrals of Cefalu, Palermo and INIonreale, however,were not begun till the middle and end of the 12th cen-tury, when the pointed style had been developed, andthey therefore scarcely come within the limits of ourperiod. But of the churches of South Italy and Sicily I haveno personal knowledge : they are known to me only frombooks and illustrations, which are accessible to everyoneequally with myself, and I am unable to add to themanything of original value.
