Nederlands: Foto. Vertegenwoordigde de tijger de griezelige kant van Java's natuur, aapjes symboliseerden het vriendelijke, ja menselijke aspect. Er zijn verhalen van Europese toeristen op Java die tijdens de jacht een aap verwondden die hen dan zo verwijtend aankeek dat ze plechtig beloofden nooit meer op apen te schieten. Ook bij de Javanen namen apen een bijzondere plaats in. Er deden verhalen de ronde dat apen ooit mensen waren die door een straf van God getroffen werden. Apen werden niet alleen met rust gelaten maar er waren zelfs plaatsen, zoals de al vroeg ook bij Europeanen populaire 'heilige' bron van Banjoe Biroe, waar zich een hele kolonie ophield, levend van wat de Javanen offerden.
