English: The Baiturrahman mosque at Koetaradja
Nederlands: Foto. Na de bloei van Pasai/Samudra volgde de opkomst van Malakka (Maleisië) als belangrijk handelssultanaat, dat zijn hoogtepunt bereikte in de 15e eeuw. In 1511 werd de stad door de Portugezen ingenomen, waarna Atjeh het belangrijkste sultanaat in die regio werd. Het beleefde zijn hoogtijdagen onder Sultan Iskandar Muda (r. 1607-1636). Atjeh was voor de VOC een concurrent in de peperhandel, maar de Compagnie heeft het sultanaat nooit onderworpen. Tot het einde van de 19e eeuw bleef het sultanaat onafhankelijk en een centrum van de islam. De grote moskee van Atjeh werd ten tijde van de Atjeh Oorlog verwoest waarna de Nederlanders een nieuwe bouwden (foto). Deze staat er nog en is verder uitgebreid. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
