Description |
Nederlands: De Grote Moskee van Djenné is gebouwd in 1906-07 op de fundamenten van een oude moskee. Deze oude moskee was de eerste moskee van Djenné, en werd in de 13e eeuw in opdracht van Koy Konboro, de 26e heerser van de stad, gebouwd. In de 19e eeuw is deze eerste moskee als gevolg religieus-politieke conflicten in verval geraakt. In 1906 begon men met de bouw van een nieuwe moskee op de oude fundamenten, die in 1907 gereed was.
De moskee is bijna helemaal uit leem gemaakt, met een minimale hoeveelheid palmhout om te constructie te ondersteunen en voor het dak. Het palmhout dient ook als permanente steiger voor de mensen die elk jaar tijdens het lentefestival de moskee opnieuw pleisteren. Daarnaast hebben ze nog een decoratieve functie. Modder wordt gebruikt om het leem van te maken, wat erg goedkoop is. Het duurdere hout wordt vanwege de kosten zo min mogelijk gebruikt. Daarnaast is de lemen constructie gunstig in het hete klimaat: de dikke muren absorberen overdag de hitte en raken deze hitte 's nachts weer kwijt, zodat de moskee overdag koel blijft. De Grote Moskee van Djenné heeft daarnaast nog speciale dakventilatie bedekt met keramische kappen die 's nachts kunnen worden verwijderd om de ruimtes te ventileren. Op de toppen van de torens worden vaak struisvogeleieren gelegd, wat vruchtbaarheid en zuiverheid symboliseert. Ook op deze foto kun je deze eieren zien liggen. (Otto, 2007) |
