Nederlands: Foto. Bij de tabakscultuur is het verwerkingsproces van de geplukte bladeren zeer arbeidsintensief. De bladeren werden eerst naar droogschuren gebracht. Deze waren op Sumatra van tijdelijke aard in verband met de wisselbouw die bij de tabak werd toegepast. Op Java waren de droogschuren over het algemeen permanente constructies. Na het droogproces werd de tabak naar de fermenteerloods gebracht. Vóór de fermentatie werd de tabak gesorteerd, waarna men stapels van gelijksoortige balderen maakte, die regelmatig gekeerd werden. Daarna werd opnieuw gesorteerd en wel op kwaliteit. Al deze handelingen werden door vrouwen verricht, doorgaans afkomstig van Java. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
