Nederlands: Foto. In 1911 kwam er een zelfstandige Burgerlijk Geneeskundige Dienst (BGD) die tot dan toe onder de Militair Geneeskundige Dienst ressorteerde. In 1925 kreeg de BGD een nieuwe naam, Dienst der Volks Gezondheid (DVG). In 1916 ging de BGD een nieuwe koers varen, later door de DVG overgenomen. Daarbij kreeg de preventieve gezondheidszorg meer nadruk dan de curatieve zorg. Met andere woorden: voorkomen werd beter geacht dan genezen. In 1936 had de DVG 177 Europese artsen in dienst, 316 Indische ('dokter djawa') en 17 Chinese. Daarnaast waren er 150 Europese en 1.210 inheemse verpleegsters, die men mantri-verplegers noemde, plus 150 vroedvrouwen. Dan waren er nog 30 zogeheten malaria-mantris, 435 vaccinateurs en 415 personeelsleden van de pestbestrijding. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Demonstratieauto van de Dienst der Volksgezondheid, ca. 1925 |
