Nederlands: Repronegatief. Belangstelling voor goud en zilver is van alle tijden. Op Sumatra waren er over het hele eiland verspreid plaatsen waar de bevolking al eeuwen kleinschalige goudmijnbouw pleegde, doorgaans in de vorm van het uitwassen van stofgoud. In de 17e eeuw beginnen de Nederlanders te Salida (of Salido), niet ver van Padang, een goud- en zilvermijn te exploiteren. Dit hielden ze met wisselend (maar meestal gering) succes en onderbrekingen vol tot het einde van de koloniale periode. De foto laat moderne machinerieën (het drijfwerk van een roterende ertsdroogoven) zien van een mijn in de Residentie Benkoelen. Daar waren sommige mijnen (bij Redjang Lebong) vermoedelijk al voor de komst van de Europeanen in exploitatie. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
