Nederlands: Slaginstrument. De meeste gamelan-orkesten worden geleid door een paar kendang, ofwel dubbelvellige conische trommen. De trom ligt in de schoot van de spelers en wordt met de handen en de vingers bespeeld. De rechterhand slaat op het grote vel en de linkerhand op het kleine vel. De twee kendang dirigeren de gamelan. Eén van de trommelspelers heeft de algehele coördinatie over de veranderingen in tempo en dynamiek, het interpreteren van de signalen van dansers en het aangeven van het begin en het einde van een sectie in een compositie..
