Nederlands: Negatief. Dat het niet alleen de oorspronkelijke Molukse bevolking was die zich in kleine bootjes met uitlegers of vlerken (vlerkprauw) waagde, mag uit deze foto blijken. De Chinese kleinhandelaar op de foto zal wel van Ternate gekomen zijn, waar in 1920 rond de 750 Chinezen woonden. We moeten aannemen dat de twee andere mannen op de foto zijn bemanning vormden en dat hij geen 'solozeiler' was. Door de aanwezigheid van de uitleggers was het een stabiele, zij het weinig comfortabele, manier van transport. Wel was het een zeer goedkope manier om allerlei (bos)producten van het eiland te exporteren en zo de Europese handelaar die zijn goederen per KPM-schip vervoerde er uit te concurreren. (P.
