Nederlands: Het pottenbakken wordt gedaan door de vrouw van de smid. Zij beheerst de speciale techniek en kennis om de juiste kleisoorten samen te stellen en verder te verwerken. Zo vermengt zij de klei met een hoeveelheid grof zand of gruis. Het aardewerk wordt vervaardigd via de 'coiling' techniek waarbij ze de pot opbouwt uit rollen klei zonder gebruik te hoeven maken van een pottenbakkersschijf. Wanneer de pot af is wordt deze aan de zon gedroogd. Het bakken gebeurt vervolgens in een grote kuil, afgedekt met stro, takken en gedroogde (ezel) mest dat in brand wordt gestoken. Het bakproces duurt ongeveer twaalf uur. De pottenbakster werkt voornamelijk op bestelling.
De opname is gemaakt tijdens één van de twee verzamelexpedities die het Tropenmuseum in 1970-1971 ondernam ter voorbereiding op de grote tentoonstelling in 1971-1972, getiteld 'Samo. Een Afrikaans Savannevolk in ontwikkeling'. De expedities duurden elk drie maanden en werden uitgevoerd door de heren J.T. Broekhuijse en F.M. Cowan. |
