Nederlands: Negatief. Pokken, was een ziekte die tot ver in de 20e eeuw regelmatig grote aantallen slachtoffers maakte. In de 18e eeuw werd in West-Europa een methode toegepast, variolatie genoemd, die als een voorloper van de vaccinatie beschouwd kan worden. Deze methode werd rond 1775 op Sumatra geïntroduceerd door de Nederlanders (te Padang) en de Engelsen (te Benkoelen). Na de introductie van de vaccinatie (het inenten van mensen met koepokstof, terwijl ze bij variolatie met verzwakte mensenpokstof werden ingeënt) op Sumatra (1805 of 1806), raakte de variolatie in onbruik. Toch zou het vaccinatieprogramma op Sumatra pas na 1850 enig succes hebben en vergeleken met Java slechts op beperkte schaal. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
