Nederlands: Repronegatief. Borneo was niet alleen het land van de 'woeste' Dajaks, bossen en zelfvoorzieningseconomie. Het was ook het gebied waar vanaf de late 19e eeuw kolen en olie vandaan kwamen. In 1891 verkreeg de ondernemer J.H. Menten de concessie 'Louise', gelegen aan een zijriviertje van de Mahakam. Het duurde een paar jaar voor Menten iemand had gevonden die bereid was (veel) geld te steken in het boren naar olie aldaar. In 1895 zag hij kans Marcus Samuel en zijn firma Shell te interesseren, zodat er in 1897 met goed gevolg geboord kon worden. Dit was het begin van 'de olie' op 'Nederlands' Borneo en tevens van Balikpapan. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Gezicht op het boorterrein Louise |
