Nederlands: Foto. Naast goede grondbewerking was ook de kwaliteit van het suikerriet van het grootste belang, evenals het moment waarop her riet gesneden werd. De kunst was uiteraard om rietvariëteiten te vinden die op de verschillende grondsoorten van de plantages de hoogste opbrengsten per hectare gaven. Ze moesten resistent zijn tegen allerlei ziektes en plagen, goed tegen droogte en wateroverlast kunnen en het riet mocht niet te hard zijn voor de molens. De proefstations (het eerste werd gesticht in 1885) speelden bij het onderzoek naar deze factoren een grote rol. De aanleiding voor de oprichting van de proefstations was een ernstige ziekte van het suikerriet geweest, de zogeheten sereh ziekte. (P. Boomgaard, 2001)
