Nederlands: Repronegatief. In de 17e eeuw werd Java beheerst door twee rijken, namelijk het sultanaat Bantam in het westen en Mataram in het midden en oosten. Bantam was al vroeg in de 19e eeuw een normale Gouvernements Residentie (een soort provincie) geworden. Mataram was in de loop der tijd steeds meer gebied kwijt geraakt. Na afloop van de Java Oorlog, in 1830, resteerden van dat rijk alleen de zogeheten Vorstenlanden, in het zuidelijk deel van Midden-Java, voornamelijk bestaand uit Soerakarta (ook Solo genoemd) en Jogjakarta (Jogja). De vorsten van deze twee gebieden (respectievelijk de Susuhunan en de Sultan) waren officieel zelfstandig maar hadden in feite weinig speelruimte. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
