Nederlands: Negatief. De zee in de Molukken bevatte meer economisch interessante zaken dan alleen vis. Zo hebben de bewoners van de Aroe Eilanden, een archipel vlakbij Nieuw-Guinea, zich al heel lang gespecialiseerd in de vangst van haaien en tripang (beide voor de Chinese markt) en het duiken naar parels en parelmoerschelpen. De mensen op de foto, vermoedelijk Aroenezen, waren in dienst van de Celebes Trading Company. Er werd ook 'ambachtelijk' naar parels gedoken, iets waar de VOC al belangstelling voor toonde. Wallace verbleef enige maanden in Dobo (in 1857, op zoek naar paradijsvogels), waar hij met groot enthousiasme over schreef in zijn Malay Archipelago. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
