Nederlands: Negatief. Steden met meer dan 100.000 inwoners waren er op Borneo tot ver in de 20e eeuw niet te vinden. In 1930 waren er zelfs maar drie plaatsen met meer dan 20.000 inwoners: Bandjermasin, Pontianak en Balikpapan. Bandjermasin was met ruim 65.000 inwoners de grootste stad van 'Nederlands' Borneo. Het was ook een redelijk oude stad, hoofdstad en haven van het gelijknamige sultanaat. Dat was in de 17e en 18e eeuw redelijk welvarend geweest door handel in peper en bosproducten. Net als Palembang was Bandjermasin een echte waterstad, waar de meeste (houten) huizen op palen stonden of uit vlotten met opbouw (rakit) bestonden. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
