Nederlands: Foto. Fort Nassau is in 1609 gebouwd op de fundamenten van het oude Portugese fort (de bewoners van Banda Neira noemen het fort nog steeds Benteng Portuges). De Engelsen boden nog het langst weerstand aan de druk van de Hollanders en bouwden versterkte handelsposten op Ai en Run. Zij betaalden hogere prijzen voor de nootmuskaat en foelie dan de Nederlanders. Die reageerden in 1611 op deze toenemende dreiging door een nog imposanter fort te bouwen, Fort Belgica, op de heuvel vlak boven het Fort Nassau. Het Fort Belgica is nu volledig gerestaureerd en domineert Neira, terwijl Fort Nassau met nog drie resterende muren er wat bouwvallig bij ligt.. Ruïne van Fort Nassau op Banda |
