Nederlands: Het masker wordt door geïnitieerde, besneden jonge mannen in de hand gedragen tijdens de initiatieriten. Het Ndemba-masker is een van de vijf soorten maskers die door de Yaka tijdens de puberteitsrituelen worden opgevoerd. De Ndemba worden uitsluitend gedragen door de ingewijde jongens. Andere typen door bijvoorbeeld begeleiders en initiators. Onderling verschillen Ndemba-maskers in hun details. Vooral door hun topornamenten (zoals huizen, dieren, barende vrouwen etc.) Zij schijnen te verwijzen naar details in de vertellingen die gepaard gaan met initiatieriten. Het masker wordt geassocieerd met rijpheid en seksuele voortplanting. Aan het eind van het feest worden de maskers vernietigd of verkocht. |
