Nederlands: Het voorschortje is een unica, een bijzonder stuk dat werd verworven in Onyege. Het is gemaakt van koehuid en bezet met glaskraaltjes in blauw, geel, groen, rood en wit. De band waarmee het schortje bevestigd wordt is uit textiel genaaid.
Volgens informatie van de Fraters behoorde het schortje aan een vrouw die Asila heette. Deze naam heeft zij ook op het schortje aangebracht, vlak onder de vrouwenfiguur. De vrouw draagt een rood sieraad om haar middel. Verder is rechtsonder een kraanvogel en rechtsboven een leeuw (?) aangebracht. Vanuit het ornament in het midden lopen pijlpunten. Het schortje is afgezet met 36 bronzen muntjes, de 'east african one cent'. De oudst gebruikte munt dateert uit 1922, de meest recente uit 1954. Aan een muntzijde staan vier olifantstanden, aan de andere de britse kroon en de naam van de heersende monarch; o.a. Georgius V, VI en Sextus en Queen Elizabeth the second. De eerste bronzen east african shilling van 1 cent werd in 1922 geintroduceerd in Kenya, Tanganyika (huidige Tanzania) en Uganda. De laatste munt werd in 1964 geslagen vlak voor de onafhankelijkheid van Kenya. Wegens het geheel ontbreken van munten uit de periode 1955-1964 zou het schortje rond 1954 gedateerd kunnen worden. Gebruikssporen ontbreken. Vermoedelijk is het schortje door een Luo vrouw als gift vervaardigd voor de Fraters. De term Onyege heeft namelijk twee betekenissen. Ten eerste is het een gehucht langs de weg Homa Bay-Kendu Bay, die langs de oever van het Victoria Meer loopt. Ten tweede is Onyege de Luo benaming voor hun traditionele kleding. Ze versieren hun kleding met abstracte, geometrische patronen (informatie R. de Ruijter). Dit schortje vormt daarop duidelijk een uitzondering, de afbeelding is sterk Koloniaal/Christelijk beïnvloed. |
