English: The young breaks free of the amnion and begins its journey to the pouch. It climbs by grasping the fur with sharp claws on its front feet and is not assisted by the mother in any way. At first the young is attached by the umbilical cord to the placenta, which is still in the birth canal. Kangaroo research was carried out by CSIRO from the early 1960s to the late 1980s. The process of kangaroo reproduction was revealed for the first time by CSIRO researchers, G B Sharman and J H Calaby, providing a basis for significant research by universities and state departments from the late 1960s.
