Summary edit

Description
English: A piece of wood retrieved in February 2015 from the wreck of the CSS Georgia in the Savannah River in Savannah, Georgia, in the United States.

The Georgia was an ironclad which was primarily used as a floating battery to defend the city of Savannah from assault by sea. She was scuttled by the Confederate States Navy on December 21, 1864.

In 2014, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began a project to dredge and deepen the Savannah River. In preparation for this effort, the wreck of the CSS Georgia will be removed from the river. Artifacts recovered from the Georgia will be preserved by Texas A&M University and studied.

The image shows a piece of wood retrieved from the wreck of the Georgia. Toredo worms (toredo navalis), or shipworms, have destroyed most of the hull and other wooden components of the vessel. Barnacle encrust the wood as well.
