DescriptionCabbage Palm in flower, Second Avenue, Dawlish - geograph.org.uk - 1359724.jpg |
English: Cabbage Palm in flower, Second Avenue, Dawlish Cabbage Palm (Cordyline australis) is not a true palm but is related to Agave. It flourishes in South Devon. I learn from my well-thumbed Mitchell that flowering is a precondition of branching, so this specimen will develop further. I find the scent heavenly, akin to honeysuckle, but people's response to a scent is highly individual: some will be ravished by what others find repellent. I seem to recall that 'australis' signifies southern, not Australian, for this species is endemic to New Zealand. |
