Français : Le caleil est une petite lampe à huile, à fond plat et bec(s), à feu nu, munie d'un crochet qui sert à la suspendre. Selon les régions il est aussi connu comme chaleil limousin et auvergnat, calelh ou calen provençal et niçois, croëju, croéju, créju savoyard; moyen français chareil, issu du lat. "caliculus" (petite coupe).[1]
Français canadien: lampe de charaille, chaleuil, lampe de fer, lampe à godet ouvert, lampe à queue et plus récemment comme bec-à-corbeau. [2], [3]
English: AE: crusie lamp, BE: chill (Cornwall), slut lamp, judy, kay, frog lamp.
