Notes | "Candle holder made from the copper sheathing of H.M.S. "Buffalo" " An account of the candlestick and other items from HMS Buffalo was given in the Auckland Star, 22 February 1936, page 11 "Several interesting relics of the wreck of H.M.S. Buffalo on July 28, 1840, at Mercury Bay. are now in the possession of Mr. T. Thorne Seccombe and are to be placed in museums. Riveted and rusted, a pair of leg-irons are a grim reminder of more callous days, and a 10lb shot - one of many in the possession of residents about the bay - also tells a tale. The leg-irons are to be placed in the Auckland Museum, and a candlestick, made from copper sheathing from the bottom of the wrecked vessel, is to go into the Old Colonists' Museum. A number of relics of the old wreck are in the possession of residents, and the ones photographed above were obtained by Mr. Seccombe - during a recent visit to the place. The leg irons were given him by Mrs G. Brophy, sen., on whose home they had been used as gate fasteners for many years. The fact that they were riveted gave rise to a story that there was a man in the irons when the ship came ashore, but the story is not substantiated. The candlestick was made by Mr. Robert White - It was fashioned from the copper sheathing of the vessel, and to this day bears the small broad arrows of Imperial identification. The cannon ball is one of many in the district and was given to Mr. Seccombe by Mr. J. Kirk." http-paperspast.natlib.govt.nz-cgi-bin-paperspast.a=d&cl=search&d=AS19360222.2.118&srpos=57&e=01-01-1935-09-04-1937-10-51-0white+auckland+museum+- (accessed 13.6.2014) | |||||||||||||||||||||||
