English: Caolas House, Coll Shown on the 1:50,000 map as Caoles, the sign on the wall states 'Caolas House'. On the 1:25,000 map it is shown as 'Walker's Cottage'.
Caolas and nearby Crossapol are two different estates; Crossapol belonged to the MacLeans of Coll. Caolas was part of the Duke of Argyll's estate until the early part of the 19th century, when it was sold to Murdoch Campbell, who had held the property under tack/rental from Argyll since the 1790s, jointly with his brothers, Malcolm and Neil (tack agreement sighted). Colin Campbell, Neil's eldest son purchased the property on his return from Australia after it was sequestrated from Murdoch's son, Alexander in the mid-1800s. Around the middle of 1850s the community of Caolas employed and housed some 37 people. Caolas remained in the same Campbell family ownership until 1955, when it was sold to one owner. Caolas was then divided and various areas were sold off in 1972. Caolas House was rebuilt from a ruin between 1987 and 1993; from 1995 until May 2008 Caolas house and farm was tenanted; it is currently unoccupied. Both Caolas and Crossapol are now in private ownership. Malcolm, Murdoch, For those interested, Neil and Colin Campbell and families are all buried in the Crossapol graveyard, along with their families and Crossapol - MacLean spouses, cousins, ... Headstones can still be seen there. |
