DescriptionCapela dos Ossos Chapel of Bones - Apr 2011.jpg | Created in the 1600s using the bones of over 5,000 deceased monks (and others), the Franciscan chapel of bones is intended to convey the Franciscan belief that the body is nothing but a vessel for the soul and should not be venerated. This picture was taken near the gilded altar, where the elaborate gold and marble contrast with the grim tableaux formed walls fashoined by skulls and bones. I you look close you'll see that even the arches, columns and doorway are fashioned from leg and arm bones with skulls dotting them. | ||
