Description
Capture of U.S. Brig Argus, Commander William H. Allen, by H.M. Brig Pelican, Commander John F. Maples, 14 August 1813. On 14 August 1813, during early morning, the brig Argus, commanded by William H. Allen, and HMS Pelican battled off England's coast. In the course of the engagement, Allen became wounded and remained at station until fainting. Shooting quickly, the British then broadsided Pelican numerous times and was just about to board the vessel when Argus struck her colours and surrendered. During battle, she lost 10 men, including Allen with 13 others wounded. Capture of USS Argus, commanded by Commander William. H. Allen, by HMS Pelican, Captain J.F. Maples, 14 August 1813.
