Dansk: Fra noterne til auktionen: "Om nærværende maleri og den hvide Würzburg-hjort fortælles følgende historie. Christian IXs svigersøn, Zar Alexander II af Rusland, der var gift med prinsesse Dagmar, deltog i jagten i Dyrehaven, skønt han var en elendig skytte. Da jagten blev afblæst og byttet lagt på parade, havde Alexander II intet vildt nedlagt, og således intet at fremvise. Resolut skød han Christian IXs hvide yndlingshjort, den afbildede, tamme Würzburg-hjort, som plejede at komme hen til kongen og spise af hans hånd. Da kongen fik nyheden, smed han i ærgelse sin lille sølvknappede stok op i maleriet, hvorved der fremkom en flænge - maleriets øverste skyer er resultatet af restaureringen. Kongen beordrede maleriet nedtaget og fjernet, og han så det aldrig mere."
