Carl Georg af Schmidt föddes den 18 november 1838 i Nyköping. Fadern, friherre Carl Johan Georg af Schmidt (1813-1897) var officer och slutligen regementschef. Carl Georg af Schmidt själv började sin bana med officersutbildning, men övergick snart till att driva och förvalta större jordbruk. Han arrenderade 1864-1868 Jakobsbergs gård. Under den tiden hann han bli ledamot av skolråd och kyrkoråd i Järfälla 1864-68. Han var också nämndeman 1867-1868. Åren 1869-1877 var han förvaltare i Bogesund och Frösvik i Östra Ryds socken och 1877-1882 arrendator av samma egendomar. lämnade därefter sina arrenden 1882 och köpte då Görväln. Han bodde dock i Stockholm och drev därifrån en rörelse med köp, förvaltning och försäljning av en rad olika egendomar och stadsfastigheter. Carl Georg af Schmidt gifte sig den 18 oktober 1881, alltså strax före tillträdet av Görväln, med sin kusin Emilia Matilda von Hedenberg.
