Notes

1. Nonnatus (canonised 1657) was not yet a Saint at the time of painting, therefore the aureole must have been added later. 2. The Mercedarian colleague holds a cardinals hat. This alludes to the Nonnatus' attempted journey to Rome to receive his cardinalship (he died as cardinalis designates in pectore, without hat or regalia). 3. Nonnatus seems much older than the thirty-six years he was said to have been at the time of his death.

4. The sandal on Nonnatus' foot was added later. The Mercadarians were a discalced (that is, barefoot) order. When they left the church of Sant'Adriano, a shoe was added, and again removed some time later.
