English: The 1869 Velocipede, a forerunner of the contemporary bicycles, on display at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, PA. This model was designed in Europe and featured two wheels of different diameters, handlebars, front-wheel foot pedals, and was made from wrought iron. Sometimes called the boneshakers due to their stiff rides, the velocipedes were replaced in 1869 by "high-wheel", or "penny-farthing" bicycles, which provided more comfortable ride. |
