Notes étude magistrale, vraisemblablement exécutée entre 1861 et 1863. La duchesse, née Caroline-Elisabeth Lagrange, fille du Général-Comte Lagrange, avait épousé en 1824 le duc de Cadore. Elle était la mère du marquis de Cadore, secrétaire d'Ambassade à Rome, alors que Carpeaux y était pensionnaire. Le duc et la duchesse, qui vivaient en Italie, recevaient volontiers, lors de leurs séjours à Rome, les artistes de la Villa Médicis
