Description
English: Carrickfergus castle (detail) (1) The construction of Carrickfergus castle was started around 1180 by de Courcy. King John took it in 1210 after a nine-day siege. In 1315-16 it held out against siege by Robert the Bruce. 1384 saw its destruction by one of the O’Neills and Schomberg took it 1690. The French naval commander Thurot took it 1760 allowing the garrison to leave in honour after a gallant defence. In 1778 Paul Jones in the privateer “Ranger” defeated the Royal Navy’s HMS “Drake” in Belfast Lough close to the castle. It remained in military use until 1928. This is the keep and part of the outer wall seen from the Marine Highway.
