English: Looking southwest at the William Thomas Carroll Mausoleum at in the overlook portion of the Rock Creek Section of Oak Hill Cemetery, a historic secular cemetery in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., in the United States. William Thomas Carroll was the clerk of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1827 to 1863.
When President Abraham Lincoln's son, Willie, died in February 1862, his body was embalmed (an unusual practice at the time) and placed in this mausoleum. After Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in April 1865, Willie's body was exhumed and the bodies of father and son traveled together in the Lincoln funeral train to Springfield, Illinois on September 19, 1871. |
