English: Cartouche in the Parish Church of St. Illtyd - Llantrithyd The word 'cartouche' originally referred to an oval circle with a name written in it, rather like a nameplate, and is of ancient Egyptian origin but is widely used now to describe a structure or figure, often in the shape of an oval shield or oblong scroll, used as an architectural or graphic ornament.
This and another in the church were retrieved from the nearby mansion when it fell into disrepair and is thus preserved here. |
