his action compelsthe disengagement or tripping at Cof the steel-tipped end of the lever B,and also the consequent drop upon theseat of the valve A at the precise pointin the stroke required to maintain theprescribed speed of the engine. Theaction is accelerated by the openingL, and checked without injury tovalves or seats by the compressions ofair under the small pistons of the dash-pot, which, in turn, is regulated by asmall air-valve adjustable to require-ments. The exhaust valve N is raised bythe bent lever 0, which is pivoted atP. The lever 0, in its ascent, rollsupon the under side of lever 0, piv-oted at R, with the result that thevalve iV begins to lift gradually,quickly opens to its full extent, thencloses rapidly, but at a decreasing rate,and finally is gently deposited uponits seat.
