s assertion is based on the factsthat, first, the plant constructed wasabsolutely new and no account wastaken for any remodeling; and sec-ond, neither care nor expense wasspared to make it the most efficientpossible. From the details of the flooringto the arrangement of skylight vol-umes might be written on this plant. We shall, however, deal only withthat problem, hitherto so many times neglected—the handling of materialsthroughout the plant; and, to give aclear understanding of this, we willfirst endeavor to give a description ofthe arrangement of buildings, yards, etc. There are two main buildings, each700 feet long and 300 feet wide. They are parallel and run north andsouth, the shipping yard being at theformer and the receiving yard at thelatter end. The transfer bay, whichis one of the important parts of thefactory, is situated between the twomain shops, and connects them attheir central points. This bay isabout 100 feet wide, and provides notonly an ample floor space for storage
