Distribution of the main types of fault rocks in the depth of the crust.

Summary edit

Description

A) Schematic diagram of four typical fault rocks (without scale) and the local geometry of the cut zone in a 1 m wide block, as it would be developed from a granite of phenocrystals. The inclined cut zones (normal or inverse) show a similar distribution of fault rocks and geometry of the cut zone in the depth of the crust. B) Schematic cross section through a zone of transverse shear. The area can widen and changes in the geometry and dominant type of fault rock occur with increasing depth and metamorphic grade.
