Description Königsberg was the capital of Germany's easternmost province until 1945, bordering on Lithuania and the Soviet Union. In 1945 it was renamed Kaliningrad, became part of the Soviet Union and it is now the capital of a a Russian oblast landlocked between Poland, the Ukraine, Lithuania and the Baltic sea. The Cathedral was about the only pre-WW2 builiding in central Königsberg to survive the massive Russian bombing in 1945.
