219 XXIII BONN Bonn in the popular mind is noteworthychiefly for its famous university, and for beingthe birthplace of Beethoven. The city was one of the fifty fortresses builtby Drusus on the Rhine, and the only Rhenishcity, with the exception of Cologne, which haskept its Roman appellation. It is mentionedby Tacitus both as Bonna and Bonensia castra. The cathedral is as famous as the univer-sity. It was founded by the mother of Con-stantine the Great, who, according to tradi-tion, consecrated the primitive church herein 319. Really, it is not a very stupendous pile, thepresent cathedral, but it looks far more impos-ing than it really is by reason of its massivecentral tower and steeple. It is one of the most ancient and most re-markable of the cathedrals on the banks ofthe Rhine. 220
