Aside from this, history has played itsgreat part so vividly that one could not forgetit if he would. The city was founded about 297 A. D. Inafter years it fell before the warlike Huns,and all but disappeared, until it became theseat of a bishop in the sixth century, the juris-diction of the bishopric extending for a dozenleagues in all directions. In the tenth century it became a ville im-periale, and by the fifteenth it had a popula-tion of more than fort\^ thousand souls, andthe bishopric counted eight hundred thousandadherents. Constance Cathedral Cathedrals and Churches of the Rhine creased in numbers to a population whichhovers closely about the five thousandmark. The emperors convoked many Diets at Con-stance, and in 1183 the peace was signed herebetwxen the Emperor Barbarossa and theLombard towns. The cathedral, or miinster, of Constanceis dedicated to Our Lady, and is for themost part a highly satisfying example of aRenaissance church, though here and theremay be noticed the Gothic, which was erectedon the eleventh-century foundations. The fagade has been restored in recentyears, and is flanked by two pseudo-Roman-esque towers or campaniles in the worst oftaste. The interior is divided into three naves bycolumns bearing rounded arches. Above, inthe grand nave, are a series of round-headedwindows, while those in the aisles are ogival. The choir contains a series of Gothic stallsin stone, which, unless it has very recentlybeen scraped ofiP, are covered with the ordi-nary cheap whitewash. The painted vault
