In so far as this book deals only with thechurches and cathedrals of the Rhine, andfollows the course of theNeder Rijn andthe Oud Rijn through Holland, there arebut three Dutch cities which bring them-selves naturally into line: Arnheim, Utrecht,and Leyden. So far as Americans are concerned, thereis a warm spot in their hearts for Old Hol-land, when they remember the brave littleband of Pilgrims who gathered at Leydenand set sail from Delfthaven for their newhome across the seas. This was but threehundred years ago, which, so far as the an-tiquity of European civilization goes, countsfor but little. It is something, however, torealize that the mediaeval architectural mon-uments of these places are the very oneswhich the Pilgrims themselves knew. It istrue, however, that their outlook upon lifewas too austere to have allowed them toabsorb any great amount of the artistic ex-pression of the Dutch, but they must un-questionably have been impressed with the 8

Below Diisseldorf the topography and ar-chitectural features alike change rapidly,and the true Rhenish architecture of heavyarches, with an occasional sprinkling offairy-like Gothic, really begins. Neuss, Es-sen, and all the Westphalian group of sol-idly built miinsters speak volumes for Ger-man mediaeval church architecture, whileup the Rhine, past Diisseldorf, Cologne,Bonn, Konigswater, Remagen, Sinzig, An-dernach, Coblenz, and all the way to Ma-yence, and on past Schaffhausen to Baselare at least three score of interesting oldchurches as far different from those else-where as could possibly be imagined, andyet all so like, one to another, that they areof a species by themselves; all except thecathedral at Cologne, which follows the bestpractice of the French, except that its naveis absurdly short for its great breadth, andthat its ponderous towers stand quite alonein
