English: This naively painted tiny portrait shows primarily the head of the sitter (1768-1840). Her hair is secured on top of her head by a large white lace head-piece, with sausage rolls of hair over her ears, two to each side. She sits in a metal locket edged with seed pearls around the front glass and with a pin on the back. A note that came with the locket identifies her as the eldest daughter of Jacob Jordan Esq., Seigneur of Terrrebonne, Lower Canada, who married William Claus, ca. 1790. It states she is the mother of Warren, Daniel, John and Julia Claus.
Français : Ce petit portrait, peint dans le style naïf, se limite surtout à la tête de Catherine (1768-1840). Selon la note qui accompagnait le médaillon, il s’agirait de la fille aînée de Jacob Jordan, seigneur de Terrrebonne, Bas-Canada, qui a épousé William Claus vers 1790. Toujours selon la note, Catherine est la mère de Warren, de Daniel, de John et de Julia Claus. Ses cheveux sont relevés sur la tête et retenus par de la dentelle; des boucles de cheveux tombent sur ses oreilles. Le portrait est enchâssé sous verre dans un médaillon métallique serti de semences de perles et muni au dos d’une épingle. |
