English: Catholic Charities of Western New York's Kenmore Office at 3370 Delaware Avenue (corner Westchester Boulevard) in Tonawanda, New York, as seen in August 2022. Built in 1941 as a new headquarters for the Town of Tonawanda police department, which heretofore had been housed next door in an annex of what's now called Memorial Hall, news coverage of the day described the architecture of the two-story building as "of Colonial design", and an austere interpretation of that then-popular style is indeed signified by the smart red brick façade and the flat-headed, small-paned, six-over-six sash windows. But the stylized eagle crowning the entrance and the square cut-stone ornaments between the windows betray an equally timely Art Deco influence. The Tonawanda Police continued operating the building until the construction of its much more spacious Frank H. Pfonner Public Safety Building on Sheridan Drive in 1972, after which point it lay vacant for a few years as the town government debated what to do with it (unrealized proposals included relocating the Kenmore village library into the building). Eventually, the building was sold to a private owner, who leased the ground floor to a daycare center and subdivided the upper floor into offices (notably those of P&D Plumbing and Heating and TAD Technical Services). It was sold again in 2010 to Catholic Charities of Western New York, a faith-based not-for-profit who operates such services there as a food pantry, mental health counseling, and a service center for the WIC nutrition program. |
