English: The Cattaraugus County Museum and Research Library, 9824 Olean Road, Machias, New York, July 2021. More popularly known as the "Old Stone House", the building dates to 1868 and is the only surviving building on the former complex of the Cattaraugus County Almshouse and Insane Asylum. It stands three stories in height, with walls of stone block quarried locally by the nationally famous Napier family of stonemasons, and sports austere vernacular Greek Revival ornamentation including a handsome two-story portico of five Doric pillars supporting a shallow-pitched hip roof. A fourth-floor attic, with a side-gabled roof and central cupola, was once present but has been removed. The Cattaraugus County Almshouse and Insane Asylum was founded in 1833 for the care of the county's "indigent, aged, orphaned, infirm and insane", and was situated on 200 acres of land purchased for $2,300. At its height, the Stone House was home to 60 residents who spent their time tending to the gardens, orchards and livestock that occupied much of the rest of the property. The institution existed until 1957, when the property sold to the nursing home now known as The Pines Machias, and though the Stone House came under threat of demolition several times in the ensuing years, it's a protected historic property today and is maintained in good condition by the county government, which uses it as a historical museum and research library.
