EXTERIOR1897 PREFACE. A score and a half years ago, when the centenary wasobserved of the settlement in Salem by the congregationfrom Ballibay, it was strongly urged by many that theproceedings should be published. Preliminaries werearranged, but the plan never came to fruition. Dr. AsaFitchs valuable and painstaking address was preserved,but only in manuscript, as also were papers full of inter-esting memories by several aged ministers, poems inspiredby the event, speeches congratulatory, reminiscent, fore-casting. These have since been collected, and occupy asecure, not obscure, corner in the Public Library. Moreover, although not printed in compact form, theyhave served as treasuries from which data have been ob-tained when other mile-stones in the pilgrimage have beenreached. The next observable point whence a look back wastaken, to insiDire a forward march, was the year 1876. Thenthe clergyman in charge compiled a history, which coversthe space from the coming of Dr. Thomas Clarkcentennialcelebr00newy
