    On June 10, 1898, a battalion of U.S. Marines under the command of Lt.

Col. Robert Huntington landed near what is now McCalla Field. One Navy surgeon and five Marines were killed in action with Spanish troops. The canon commemorating this even stands watch over the bay and is pictured

as it stood in the early 1920’s and how it looks today."
