Synonyms include Lemaireocereus chichipe, Myrtillocactus chichipe, Cereus mixtecensis and Lemaireocereus mixtecensis. Common names include Chichibe, Chichipe, Chichitun, and Chichituna. It is found in the Puebla and Oaxaca regions of Mexico. The plants are tree-like, branching more or less terminally to form distinct crowns, sometimes with distinct trunks. They can grow to 4m (13 ft) high. The flowers open at night, yellowish-green to creamy white. The fruits are globose, deep reddish-purple. Cereus, género de plantas de la familia de las cactáceas que engloba gran número de especies no bien determinadas. Se encuentran representantes del género en el sur de Estados Unidos, México, América del Sur y Antillas. Muchas especies se cultivan con frecuencia, algunas de ellas bajo la denominación de cereus de floración nocturna. En América del Norte, la especie más conocida es el saguaro o cactus gigante, que crece en Arizona y en el estado mexicano de Sonora, donde alcanza hasta 15 m de altura. La planta joven tiene un único tronco, pero los ejemplares más viejos tienen hasta veinte ramas vueltas hacia arriba. Los cereus desérticos de floración nocturna son conocidos por sus enormes y fragantes flores blancas, que en casi todas las especies se abren por la noche. Varias revisiones recientes dividen este género en hasta diez distintos. Clasificación científica: el género Cereus pertenece a la familia de las cactáceas (Cactaceae). El saguaro o cactus gigante es de la especie Cereus giganteus. Los cereus desérticos de floración nocturna son variedades de la especie Cereus greggii. |
