Constelación del Hemisferio: SUR-NORTE (Ecuatorial).

Nombres de las Estrellas:

Alfa, MENKAR - Del árabe: al-Minkharm "el hocico". Estrella rojizo.

Beta, DENEB KAITOS - Del árabe: Dhanab al-Qitas al-Janubi, "(la estrella en) la rama austral de la cola del monstruo marino". Estrella amarilla.

Gamma, AL KAFF AL JIDHMAH - Del árabe: todas las estrellas que conforman la cabeza de la ballena.

Zeta, BATEN KAITOS - Del árabe: Batn al-Qitas, "el abdomen de la ballena (o monstruo marino). Estrella anaranjada.

Eta, DENEB ALGENUBI - Del árabe: la cola.

Iota, DENEB AL-SHEMALI - Del árabe. Estrella anaranjada.

Lambda, MENKAR - Del árabe: la nariz de cetus.

Omicron, MIRA - Del latín: "maravillosa", del título de la obra de Hevelius: HISTORIOLA MIRAE STELLA. Esta es la primera estrella variable observada como tal, su variabilidad fue descubierta por Fabricius en 1596. Estrella rojiza, variable de período largo, 331.8 días.

Phi 1, 2, 3 y 4, AL NITHAM 2 - Del árabe: el collar.
